The Quarry water to farm field project in Kareepra Grama Panchayat  implemented under the coordination of Haritha Keralam Mission as a part of Navakeralam Karmapadhathi is becoming a model water conservation project in the state.


Water from a 20 acre deep rock quarry located in Ulavukod Ward of Kareepra Grama Panchayat of Kollam District is pumped through a small channel using a solar pump to the nearby huge pond. This is a project that will be used for agriculture in the five wards of Ulavukod, Vakanad, Nedumonkavu, Kodikod and Etuwaiikod. Kareepra Grama Panchayat thus to ensure uninterrupted cultivation of 40 acres of paddy fields here and maintain the ground water table in the area to prevent drought.

The project is also beneficial in keeping kareepra as a barren-free village. It also has the distinction of being a completely green energy project. With the help of the State Hydrographic Division, the quarry has been completely bathymetry surveyed and water level determined. Anert under the state government has installed the solar plant and pump set for the project operation. The excess electricity generated here is handed over to the Kerala State Electricity Board.
